America’s Cup bellyache? To call it ironically so is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but in fact the organization of the 2021 Cup in Auckland, as was perhaps physiologically predictable, goes by overcoming some obstacles.
THE KNOTS.
Holding sway in recent weeks has been some tension between the defender Emirates Team New Zealand and the Challenge of Record Luna Rossa over the acceptance of new challenges (Altus, Dutch Challenge and Stars&Stripes) that came in over the time limit (even and especially with payment). READ HERE and HERE who the challengers are for the America’s Cup 2021.
But the thorniest issue is the organizational-technological one, which in a way ties in with the first point: there is no technical time to hold the first leg of the World Series in October, planned to be held in Cagliari, which will be postponed to spring 2020. Making it official was Matteo Plazzi for Luna Rossa at the FIV Sailor of the Year awards ceremony. The design and technology development of AC75s is an, understandably, complex affair. The fact that we have accepted teams beyond the time limit only delays this process, since some components will be provided one design to all teams and since Luna Rossa certainly does not want to have a one-team event in Cagliari in order to provide the best possible show. It therefore needs, rightly, time. The America’s Cup with this edition-the actual Cup will be in Auckland in 2021 preceded by the selection of challengers called the Prada Cup-is staking everything: credibility, appeal, audience, money. Forbidden to make mistakes, forbidden to present a limp event.
THE CUP ON TV
For this reason, it has already been announced that the regattas will be broadcast free-to-air on all platforms and TVs that request it. In short, maximum visibility, goal the general public, but to achieve this goal you need a show of a certain level, one that excites. The ingredients are all there, with a new boat that could make many skeptics reconsider, but there is no need to rush.
