ABOUT THE BOAT – ABORA IV

Sailing in the Mediterranean this summer you may come across a strange sailing object built from two and a half million reeds. Take a picture of it because it is something exceptional. The initiator of this curious scientific initiative is Dominique Görlitz, a biogeographer and experimental archaeologist from the German city of Chemnitz: the “boat” is called “Abora IV.”

What does Görlitz want to demonstrate? Its purpose is to retrace the route, which many believe to be impossible, that there was a route across the Mediterranean to Egypt in very distant times, a trade route between the Black Sea region and Egypt.

Thus says Dominique Görlitz himself, “Many historians and experienced sailors doubt that long-distance trade on this difficult route was even possible for a sailboat. But I am firmly convinced that man was a master of wind and weather much earlier than previously thought.”

“Abora IV” was built on the Russian and Bulgarian Black Sea coast and will start sailing in July.

Abora IV at seaGörlitz is no stranger to such ventures; with a similar boat in 2007 he set out from New York to reach Europe by sailing against the wind.

Before even reaching the Azores, however, the extraordinary voyage had to be canceled due to excessive damage to the hull.

This time he wanted to play it safe with Abora IV, so the boat is built on the Black Sea near the expedition’s home base.

The stated source of inspiration for the design and construction of the boat is Thor Heyerdal’s famous Kon Tiki. If you want to learn more about Kon Tiki CLICK HERE.
