Fully recyclable sails (cruising and racing) already exist, and they are an all-Italian invention. They are One Sails’ 4T Forte and are based on a special high-modulus fiber that is the brainchild ofengineer Molta (former creator of the Millenium Continuous Strand Membranes), developed in collaboration with a chemistry professor at the University of Pisa. STR (Solid Stripes), this is the name of the fiber that is inserted inside a low-deformation composite structure made with Multi Micro Structure technology.
Using a “micro layer” structure of 6 to 18, all elements of the composite membrane are vacuum fused together in an irreversible polymerization process. “We do not need adhesives, resins, solvents or films“, Fabio Ascoli of One Sails tells us. “The sail is one piece composed of a polymer that does not alter its molecular structure during its process, a unique case in the world of sails“.
This means that once the sails are at the end of their cycle they can be melted down and the material 100% recycled: “We take back used sails, ‘melt’ them in a 120-degree oven and make tablets of material from them that can be reused in a variety of ways. They can become bottles and various objects, or remain within the scope of sailing. For example, we have already used them to create mainsail boards for 420s.”
There are two versions of the 4T Forte: the Cruise, white in color, expressly designed for the cruising world; the Race, black in color, for those who race. In addition to the “eco” component, their being ‘monostructural’ provides strength, toughness, and resistance to weathering such as UV rays and moisture.
