“Persico Marine is not only the shipyard that builds the Formula 1s of the sea such as Volvo 65s or America’s Cup boats, but we are also a shipyard that builds high-end custom boats that are a perfect balance between racing and cruising. This is, for example, the Wallys we built, and so is our latest creation, the P65 on a Felci Yachts design,” Marcello Persico had told us a few months ago in a phone chat. And here she is one of the top-ranked custom boats under sail, the P65 signed by Felci Yachts and built by Persico Marine in the shipyard’s “Cruising” division in Carrara, which complements the one in Nembro (Bergamo).
“A boat like the P65 comes from an idea of the client who chose a designer and approached Persico proposing a design and the challenge of making it. It is a boat we care a lot about and, why not, once the first one is launched it could also become a mini-series where each unit is customized to the client’s needs,” continues the entrepreneur at the head of what is one of Italy’s most important high-tech companies.
Umberto Felci in an official note explained the genesis of the project and the philosophy behind P65: “The input initial, received from the client, were to create a unique yacht capable of participating with excellent potential in offshore racing, but at the same time to be perfect for comfortable and relaxing cruises. We started from a blank sheet of paper, thus having the opportunity to really develop something special, which could bring technologically and aesthetically innovative elements to the field of cruiser – racer. A design theme, that of fast cruisers is particularly dear to us and one that we are addressing with increasing experience and dedication. Mixing such different elements is a complex thing, and certainly one must have a full understanding of both worlds, the “racing” and the “cruising” worlds, to accomplish it. Being able to develop an “integrated design,” developing the project 360 degrees in-house at Felci Yachts, in single interface with the shipyard and the owner, is a big advantage in achieving this difficult goal.”
“The hull is very streamlined, thanks to the low freeboard and low displacement,” explains Felci. “The hull is extremely high-performance, characterized by goblet sections that offer great stability and power at high heeling angles and reduced drag at straight hulls. We are talking about a 20-meter yacht that weighs only 18.5 tons, this is thanks to state-of-the-art construction, to interiors made entirely of lightened material and a lifting keel that allowed the torpedo to be lowered down to 4.4 meters. Setting choices functionalist have driven the design of the bridge and deck, always looking for innovative solutions at the level of construction, aimed at the best ergonomics and using excellent components. The deck equipment is of the highest quality and has an ideal layout for both offshore racing and sailing with reduced crew. Dal punto di vista estetico molti sono i segni caratterizzanti di questa nuova linea di fast cruiser, sia a livello di opera morta che di sovrastrutture. The dolphin boat started with the forehand reversed, The very pronounced “chamfer” at the bow and the shapes of the deckhouse with its glazing that echoes it, give great dynamism and movement to the design, characterizing it formally and offering aerodynamic advantages.”
