After telling you everything you need to know about the evolutionary effects of your propeller and how to take advantage of them when maneuvering in restricted waters, with Beskilled experts let’s look at how a potential problem for mooring-the current-can be used to your advantage.(photo by Luciano Piazza)
HOW TO HARNESS THE POWER TO MOOR
The current, which is often present in port basins with catways, is the primary element that will determine the approach and management of your maneuver.
Regardless of its intensity the current and the resulting drift effect will insist on the entire living work for the duration of the mooring so the current will always command.
Since you cannot compensate for it with the evolutionary effect of the propeller, you can take advantage of it by orienting your appendages with respect to its direction, pulling over with greater ease. Mooring in the English style, that is, with the broadside side by side with the quay, is the most common maneuver in the many landings set up along river estuaries and canal ports of our peninsula. This maneuver is perceived to be simpler than the stern approach but, in the case of a river, a new element “the current” will need to be added.

If the current changes in intensity.
However, the movement of the water relative to the bottom can be turned into a valuable aid by giving it the function that the bow thruster and bow thruster normally perform. Therefore, our goal will be to be able to move the boat sideways so that it can be moored in even very tight spaces.
The necessary condition should always be to proceed against the current. Even in cases where you have overrun the berth and need to turn back, you must always turn back in the opposite direction to it.
The technique involves approaching the height of the berth, slowing to a stop parallel to the berth. At this point it will be sufficient to pull the bow slightly toward the dock to get the same current to work on the appendages and push the boat sideways. The current will change in intensity, so it will be necessary to work with the motor in order to maintain constant alignment with the mooring.
At the same time, it will be necessary for the orientation of the hull with respect to the current flow to be such that the speed of translation to the jetty is not increased essential.
