Already many (over 40) crews have said “yes” to the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in Santa Margherita! And scrolling through the list of entrants, one finds many beautiful stories of “normal” and peculiar boats.
YELLOW LIKE THE SUN
There is Yellow, a Ziggurat 916 “yellow as the sun,” as her owner, Sarah Magozzi, writes: “She has been giving us great satisfaction since we first boarded her to bring her to Genoa from Venice, now more than two years ago. This year for her 40th birthday we gave her a wonderful jib, just the way she likes it. We look forward to trying it out at the Vela Cup and having a wonderful sailing weekend all together, just the way we like it.”
101 YEARS AND NOT FEELING IT
There will be no shortage of Dufour 39 Vizcaya this year either. Also part of the crew will be the “legendary” Angela Besana Gagliardi, the “grandmother” of the VELA Cup. It is now 101 years old but she is the one pressing to participate. “An example for younger people (all of us of course),” writes Rinaldo Santi, owner of the boat.
THAT BLUE HULL
At the VELA Cup there will be the blue hull of Sula, Manuele Micocci’s splendid Dufour Arpège, dated 1967 and revitalized through painstaking restoration by her owners, father and son, who devoted all their spare hours to refitting this jewel that marks the birth of so-called popular sailing.
THE “PIMPED OUT” BRIGAND
Antonio Castellotti’s Antares arrives from Civitavecchia and is a Brigand 9.50 Camper & Nicholson 1974 design, modified with the addition of bowsprit, gardening and countershaft. Refitted 2012. Employed for the education of nautical students and as ANMI (National Association of Sailors of Italy ) representation. Has participated in club regattas and vintage boat rallies (notably Imperia 2016 and 2018) and 3 editions Genoa Boat Show as a classic boat on display.
THE “STAGE BOAT”
Mirit of the Ruocco-Bruzzone-Barabino trio is a Grand Soleil 39 from the mid-1980s, a design by the legendary Alain Jezequel, which recently became “famous” on the web because it served as the stage for a video clip of a band (the BrickLane) featuring the drummer playing in a deckhouse in high winds on the open sea.
