Theother day, with an Instagram post from the Sailing Newspaper, we published a video of a sailboat being blown up following a simulated gas leak. The test, now a few years old (2012), was carried out by Yachting Monthly magazine, which literally tore apart the “crash-test boat” on hand.

FORTUNE SOMETHING HAS CHANGED
When we posted the same video on www.giornaledellavela.com five years ago, the reactions were very different, with lots of shares of the post and enthusiastic comments regarding the usefulness of the video. No comment on the damage to the environment caused by this test.
What has happened in five years? Fortunately, people’s approach to environmental issues has changed. Demonstrations to save the planet from climate change, Greta Thunberg’s big media impact, sustainability increasingly becoming a banner for industry, campaigns to raise awareness about the absurdity of single-use plastics. Campaigns that have been successful. For example, notice the amount of metal water bottles you see around, replacing plastic bottles.
THE SAILOR KNOWS WHICH SIDE TO BE ON
And it was in this vein that last year we decided to create Medplastic, the project to safeguard the Mediterranean threatened by plastic: sailors, we told ourselves, chose the most environmentally friendly medium there is as their companion on adventures. The sailboat uses one of the four elements to move: the wind. Boaters have already decided whose side they are on: that of those who defend the sea. Then his task is important: to spread the culture of respecting the environment by becoming an ecomariner. Both when sailing Mediterranean and in everyday life.
In less than a year, we have mobilized hundreds of plastic hunters around our coasts, talked to experts, carried out surveys and reported. By the way, you will find Medplastic with a dedicated booth at the TAG Heuer VELAFestival (May 2-5, Santa Margherita Ligure), stop by and sign the Ecomarinaio Manifesto and learn about our projects.
