Betty Buoys: the smart buoy that you can book, manage and pay for directly from the app

For the past few years, buoy mooring has been increasingly in demand throughout the Mediterranean. The reason is simple: experiencing the boat moored in a beautiful roadstead is much more exciting than experiencing the harbor. In addition, almost every boat on the road today has a tender on board, so it is easy to reach land if needed.

The problem is that it often becomes complicated to manage the mooring at the buoy, there is not always a mooring operator around, you don’t know which number to call, you don’t understand which buoys are free. A reality in Arzachena (SS) has found the solution to revolutionize buoy mooring, making it smart, simple and also beneficial to the environment.

Betty Buoys – An app to book the buoy

By downloading an app, one can view a map with the location of all smart buoys, check if there is a berth available at the chosen destination, reserve it, and make payment. There are buoys for boats up to 15 meters, up to 30 meters and for maxi yachts. Once registered in the app with the size of the boat, only buoys suitable for the length of one’s boat will be shown automatically, providing all information related to the seabed and marine weather conditions in the surrounding area.

When you get to the buoy, a vertical pin rises to the height of two meters to facilitate mooring. Through the system, the user can map the entire Mediterranean and see free and suitable buoys to moor his boat in the days ahead as well, with the ability to plan an itinerary without the risk of not finding a place to moor.

An additional interesting feature is related to nautical tourism. In every port and marina there are different businesses, but it is often difficult to connect them with shipowner. Through the Book section included in the Betty Buoys app, businesses within a 30-mile radius of the boat can send a personalized notification to all Betty Buoys users in the vicinity. With notifications, businesses can make themselves known and activate special promotions or discounts for owners.

Dead body becomes an aquarium

Finally, there is a green aspect to the Betty Buoys. The dead body is created in collaboration with the Genoa Aquarium and several universities. In fact, it is like a “den” for fish, Posidonia and Cystoseira are planted, encouraging the survival of marine life.

The Betty Buoys project was also highly appreciated during the last Genoa International Boat Show, where the buoys were on display in the Startup Area. As part of the Design Innovation Award 2022, Betty Buoys was awarded the Special Innovation Award with the following motivation. “For integrated research efforts focused on sustainable solutions to an urgent problem.”
