bavaria C42
On the one hand there was to respect the philosophy of the Bavaria shipyard, which has built its success on comfortable cruising boats. On the other, market demand: today’s boaters want to have fun sailing, and performance matters too (by the way, the more you sail, the less you pollute: a very timely topic). It was not an easy challenge for the Cossutti Yacht Design studio to design the smallest boat in the C-Line range, the new C42 that we will be able to touch at the Dusseldorf Boat Show (January 18-26, 2020).

“V” FOR CONVENIENCE

A cruising boat, for family use, demands large spaces below deck: a target achieved thanks to the particular shape of the hull, with a “V” starting from the bow, thin along the waterline that widens as it reaches the deck ensuring more forward volume. The edge is very pronounced toward the stern and the maximum beam is set back-another solution to increase space in the cabins. The numbers speak for themselves: if the old Bavaria 42 Cruiser (12.99 m long) had a maximum width of 3.99 m, the C42 (12.38 m long) goes up to 4.29. As much as 30 centimeters more.

The hull shape designed by Cossutti has a second advantage: the lines increase stability, lengthen the waterline and improve performance, giving greater feel and mastery in maneuvering. The powerful volume in the bow is to keep the deck drier with wave. A cast-iron keel with 2,700 kg of ballast and a total weight of only 9,600 kg ensure a good righting coefficient.

MORE SAIL, MORE SPEED

Now we come to performance: how do you make a boat go harder? Simple: with more “cloth.” We still find it useful to compare with the Bavaria Cruiser 42 (2004 boat), which had a total sail area of 85.47 sq. m. Very little, compared to the 100.6 square meters of the new C42: 54 square meters of mainsail and 47 of the jib (self-tacking, standard), with a Code0 of 85 square meters and the gennaker of 140 square meters.

THE COVER.

The deck layout is marked by simplicity: walkable bow and wide side passages, cockpit with ergonomic L-shaped benches that allow you to sit quietly upwind or dine on the large table, forward sundeck. Optional helm seats expand comfort aft. There is no shortage of storage space: two large lockers located in the cockpit and in the bow.

The interior layout in three-cabin configuration

THE INTERIOR.

Innovative hull design allows for novel solutions below deck. Cabins are available in two-suite versions with large bathrooms, as well as three-suite versions with two bathrooms. In the square with U-shaped sofa on the starboard side and the lounge-bench on the port side, it is possible for eight people to dine. The kitchen is really that of a home, with a large galley. Large countertops, plenty of storage space, and a three-burner oven that is part of the standard equipment.

The two-cabin layout

In the main bulkhead to the left of the C42 is the “home office” or navigation system. A real workstation that allows you to sit lengthwise, to which is added the electronic system and numerous document storage solutions.

Due to the V-shaped bow and side windows, the forward cabin not only looks large, but has a really important height. The master bed is 1.80 meters wide and 2.10 meters long. Added to this are closets and lots of storage space. The two aft cabins have berths 1.60 wide and 2 m long. The bathroom on the left also has a separate shower.
