ELUSIVE 2, Sail No: MLT 450, Model: Beneteau First 45`, Owner/Entrant: Christoph, Aaron & Maya Podesta, Class 4

We have hardly had time to tell you about the provisional leadership of JPK 11.80 Courrier Recommandé, by Gery Trentesaux, former winner of the 2018 edition, that the ranking has changed again.

First place in IRC overall, the ranking that awards overall victory in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, officially belongs to Aaron, Christoph & Maya Podesta’s First 45 Elusive II, a veteran boat of the Middle. The three are the sons of Arthur, a longtime member of the Royal Malta Yacht Club that organizes the race, who took part in every edition of the Middle Sea Race from 1968 to 2014 before passing away in 2015. His own father won the first edition in 1968. A great family history closely linked with the most beautiful regatta in the Mediterranean. The First 45 with which they have been racing since 2009 has been optimized and prepared expressly for offshore racing, with numerous improvements to appendages and sail plan.

Elusive 2 becomes the first Maltese winner of the 606nm Mediterranean offshore classic since 2014 and the eighth Maltese winner in the race’s 51-year history. The crew consists of Maya Podesta, Aaron Podesta, Christoph Podesta, David Anastasi, Gareth Grech, Ben Pace Lehner, Andrea Crocella, Tom Zammit Tabona, Adrian Stone, Magnus Everskog.

The JPK 1180 Courrier Recommandé then slips to second, remaining in third is Renzo Grottesi’s ClubSwan 42 Be Wild, best Italian, which also wins the ORC Overall (which does not award the Middle trophy, however). Slipping instead to sixth in IRC overall is the Ice 52 Prima Vista Lauria, which, however, confirms its excellent performance with first place in Class 3.
