Those who thought that this America’s Cup was of no interest to the public were sorely mistaken; all it took was an announcement by Luna Rossa to set off a veritable “stampede.” On Saturday, December 7, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team will open the doors of its highly secret base at Cagliari’s Ichnusa Pier to fans and enthusiasts for the first time. During the visit, participants will have the opportunity to test their skills as coxswains, grinders, trimmers or riggers by challenging the team sailors. Nearly 800 seats are available but there is already a risk of “sold out.”
This is the LINK to fill out the application.
THE RED MOON BASE
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s base is where the energies of the team’s men and women are focused during the two and a half years of preparation before the America’s Cup challenges begin. This is where tests and analysis are done every day and decisions are made that will determine the boat’s performance. The crew goes to sea, the shore team assists, the designers collect data-everyone plays his or her role, from early morning training to lunch in the mess, through the sailing session to debrief meetings in the late afternoon.
But what is behind all this work? Did you know that almost 120 people work at Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli headquarters?
At the Open Day, the public will be able to visit the base, find out how the sailing team trains, what a typical day is like for a sailor, and many other behind-the-scenes secrets. Participants will also be able to try their hand at helmsman, grinder, trimmer and discover all the “crafts” of the America’s Cup accompanied by Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team members.
