On days when the wind blows intensely from the land, as can happen for example with the Tramontana in Liguria or the Bora in the Adriatic, it is very common for the intensity and direction to be quite variable. The typical situation in which we can talk about gusty winds, and we will therefore be forced to multiply our attention in running the boat.
Observing the sea surface at this point becomes basic for reading the gusts that will hit our sails. Because of the orography of the coast, the wind encounters a number of obstacles: buildings, hills, whatever is on the coast affects the intensity and direction of the wind, which is why sailing with the wind blowing from land is a bit more complex than normal. The intensity could go from 10 to 30 knots in a matter of seconds, the direction may undergo substantial jumps, even 90 degrees. How to deal with it?
It is essential to have mainsheet and mainsail carriage on hand at all times with the circuits well spun, in case we will be forced to let go quickly to keep the boat in control. Same thing with the jib sheet: if we are sailing upwind for example, and a gust of low comes in with a substantial wind shift, it can happen that our headsail is violently necked, putting the crew in trouble.
In the video we show you, posted on navigator Jean Pierre Nicol’s facebook page, we can observe the effects of a wind shift. Bravo to the crew for reacting promptly by leaving the jib sheet and changing tack.
