Young talents of world sailing, are you ready for a new challenge? The Youth America’s Cup renews its format and once again becomes a great showcase for young sailors from around the world. This is a joint initiative between the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS), China Sports Industry Group (CSIG) and Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ).
In keeping with the original America’s Cup Deed of Gift, the event is designed to be a “friendly competition between yacht clubs of all nations.” Unlike previous editions, more entries from different countries will be allowed.
The age limit for crews is between 18-24 years old. To encourage diversity at this high level, teams will consist of a mixed crew of four sailors per boat, including two females and two males with a maximum crew weight of 311 kg.
A concept for a new boat was developed for the occasion. The AC9F will be a nine-meter monohull foiler that was designed by New Zealand-based Yachting Developments (YDL) with valuable input from the Emirates Team New Zealand design team, Southern Spars, and North Sails.
The event is designed to be multi-stage, starting with fleet races in China in November 2020 and then has match racing scheduled in Auckland from February 18-23, 2021 with the finals taking place from March 8-12, 2021 right in front of the RNZYS in the shadow of Auckland’s iconic Harbour Bridge.
