Caprera Master Stage, how to adjust sails in high winds
Luna Rossa skipper Max Sirena, special guest at the High Performance Master stage course with Ganga Bruni of Caprera Sailing Center, has arrived. Incredible emotion for the whole base and for us lucky ones who are experiencing this as students.
We learned a great deal from their lessons (we will recount all the techniques we learned in an article in the next issue of the Sailing Gironale) and from Ganga’s radio advice during training sessions.
Ganga and Max’s tips for adjusting sails in high winds
If in the past few days we have understood the importance of crew roles, trim, roll tack and fine tuning of sails and techniques for sailing in low wind, today we have prepared the boat for sailing in high wind, so we have focused on on tensioning the shrouds and backstay, hoisting Swedish mainsail and jib, and maneuvering at speed in regattas, taking advantage of aft gaits to simulate conditions where gennaker cannot be hoisted.
We got valuable advice from Max: always be ready to maneuver but do not give in to the tendency to anticipate too much in the preparation of maneuvers, a natural tendency of bowmen and tailers, because every movement in the boat corresponds to a loss of trim and therefore a drop in performance.
