There are only two weeks left until the TAG Heuer VELA Cup Mariperman, the fourth leg of the sailing circuit organized in this 2021 by the Journal of Sailing, which takes place Sept. 24-26 in the Gulf of La Spezia. Now in its 33rd year, the famed Mariperman Trophy will be a wonderful opportunity for all sailing enthusiasts to continue to sail the waves and get together after the summer.

During the event organized by the Navy’s Naval Support and Experimentation Center (CSSN), under the aegis of the Northern Maritime Command and with the contribution of the Committee of Sailing Clubs of the Gulf of La Spezia, technical regattas for both modern and vintage tethered boats will be organized, but there will also be the opportunity to participate in the Asso Vela sailings and then the highlight event, namely the Vela Cup for a true celebration of the sea.
Lots of in-water racing, awards ceremony and Boatswain’s Dinner
As for the TAG Heuer VELA Cup Mariperman program, it starts on Saturday, September 25 with registration and collection of gift bags with gadgets from the event sponsors which will be followed by pre-race briefing. The day will then continue with water trials, including the Mariperman & AssoRegata Trophy (tethered boats) & AssoVeleggiata, and the 8th CSSN – ADSP Trophy (Vintage Sails). This was followed by the AssoNautica Regatta and Sailing Awards Ceremony and the Boatswain’s Dinner with drawing of the many prizes up for grabs among all participants in the two-day event. These include the splendid TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch, the “magical” Garmin InReach satellite GPS, packs of Veneziani nautical glazes and paints, and Yellow-V’s VB200T pneumatic tender.
On the other hand, the TAG Heuer Vela Cup Mariperman “Sailing in the Gulf of Poets and Science” is scheduled for Sunday, September 26, with departure and arrival from Molo Italia along a spectacular coastal route that skirts the islands of Palmaria and Tino.
On the ground concerts, fishing competitions and aerobatic flights
Accompanying the sailing events will be an opening concert by the Northern Maritime Command’s Presidium Fanfare in Lerici’s central square, a national shore fishing competition, and a flyover of ultralight aerobatic aircraft from the GiroFly Flight School in Massarosa, which will fly over the Gulf of La Spezia drawing the Tricolor.
It will also be possible to admire all the splendid vintage boats moored on the Assonautica piers, including the Navy’s brig Nave Italia and the “Goletta Pandora” of the Vela Tradizionale association and from the “Tornavento boat,” which together with the Tender to Nave Italia Onlus foundation will take children from the ASL5 Spezzino children’s neuropsychiatry department and the association Il Porto dei Piccoli to sea. In short, at the TAG Heuer VELA Cup Mariperman must be there!
