Forty-seven years ago, the GdV was born. Now browse through its 521 issues
It was July 3, 1975, 47 years ago. The first issue of the Sailing Newspaper came out on newsstands.. My father Mario Oriani told years later how he came up with the idea of founding a newspaper that spoke only of sailing, nothing but sailing.
The idea of publishing such a specialized journal, according to publishing experts a folly, was born in the cockpit of the boat you see above, a Swan 43 named Lunic 2, his boat.
Well, Mario Oriani narrates that the inspiration came to him thanks to a simple consideration: “I had realized that sailing was a therapeutic escape without being a way to escape and escape, but to check, to reflect, to decide. It made me feel like a free man“. He continued in his analysis, “Like a miraculous medicine, a day of sea and wind was enough to regenerate me. It only took a few hours of my little free time and the beneficial effect lasted for weeks“.
In this thought lies the real reason for the birth of the GdV and its 47-year success. Forty-seven years ago these considerations were considered “naïve” by marketing experts. Reread today, forty-seven years later, they are recognized as one of the main reasons, in the postpandemic, for the growth that boating is having today. Regardless of economic trends.

We have selected the best of what we have published in our history, hundreds of news reports from the 521 issues published so far. We scanned them to make them digital, retrieving them from the precious bound books that contain all the vintages.
To each article we have added the cover of the issue in which it came out, accompanied by a new title and a brief summary, so that the topic and why it was chosen are immediately clear.
To top it off, we created a platform, viewable from all devices (computers, tablets, smartphones) where, as in Netflix, one click is all it takes to access viewing. All that is needed is a code to access the “Journal of Sailing History” platform, which is sent to all existing subscribers and those who would like to take advantage of this small but significant online encyclopedia of sailing history through the pages of the Journal of Sailing.

There will not, it should be made clear, be any increase in the cost of the subscription to the Journal of Sailing. It is just one more service we are offering to those who subscribe today to our magazine or newspaper, whatever.
At a time of indiscriminate price increases, the heralded death of traditional publishing, and the crisis of journalism understood as a service of knowledge, analysis, and insight for citizens, we want to continue to bring our vital contribution as storytellers. To sailing enthusiasts in our case.
