tomislav horvatincicWe do not tell you that this is a story with a happy ending, because lives have been destroyed. But at least justice has been done. Since Wednesday, July 14, Croatian tycoon Tomislav Horvatincic has been in jail in Zagreb.

Santa Pazienza destroyed after crash that cost Mr. and Mrs. Salpietro their lives

The businessman had been sentenced in December 2019 by the Croatian judiciary to serve four years and 10 months in prison for his role in the August 16, 2011 boating accident off the islet of Barilac (near Primošten/Capokesto).

Francesco Salpietro and Marinella Patella

An accident cost the lives of Italian couple Francesco Salpietro (60) and Marinella Patella (60), who were run over by Horvatincic’s speedboat–an Itama 40 Open–while aboard their sailboat, the Grand Soleil 39 Santa Pazienza.

One can syndicate that four years and ten months in prison (without the benefit of parole) is short, but justice, at last, has run its course. Even though it took him so long.

The first guilty verdict, issued in 2015, had been overturned due to procedural flaws, while the second time, in November 2017, the entrepreneur had been acquitted: the court had ruled that Horvatinčić had been unable to do anything to prevent the collision between his speedboat (an Itama 40 Open) and the boat because he was struck by syncope within seconds of the impact. Very weak thesis and sentence that had caused a stir in Croatia.

Following the acquittal, the couple’s son, Federico Salpietro, had also sent us a lengthy letter retracing the tragedy, which we recommend you read to understand the dynamics of the accident and the subsequent court steps.
