Italian Offshore Championship: everything in the balance with one race to go

Day three of the Italian Offshore Championship in Punta Ala was marked by lighter winds, the typical Tuscan mistral breeze in fact came in late compared to previous days. The Race Committee still managed to bring home two trials with winds first on 7 knots and then rising in the second to 10. The rankings are being determined with one race to go, which promises to be very close to award podium places.
GROUP 1 CLASSES A+B REGATTA – Solidly in command is the team of Katarina II, Swan 42 of Estonian owner Aivar Tuulberg, with tactician Tommaso Chieffi (1-1 on the day) aboard with 8 points, second and first Italian is Fantaghirò, another Swan 42 of Carlandrea Simonelli (CN Marina di Carrara), with Flavio Favini (3-2) with 14 points, followed by Blue Sky, Swan 45 of Claudio Torrieri (NRV) with Lorenzo and Marco Bodini (7-5) with 24 points. Third Italian is Duende Aeronautica Militare, Raffaele Giannetti’s Vismara 46 (CN Riva di Traiano), which made up points for a partial rehabilitation from the first day’s tonnage disqualification (8-6.5), with 27.5 points).
GROUP 1 CLASSES A+B CRUISE – Leading the way is Canopo, Adriano Majolino’s Grand Soleil 39 (CN Riva di Traiano) (2-3), with 28 points. Second Athyris &C, Grand Soleil 43 by Piergiorgio De Nardis (CV Roma) (5.5-4) with 31.5 points), third Morgan IV, another Grand Soleil 39 by Nicola De Gemmis (CC Barion) (5.5-6.5) with 36 points.
GROUP 2 CLASS C REGATTA – Leading the way again is Sugar 3, owned by Estonian shipowner Ott Kikkas, with Sandro and Paolo Montefusco (3-4) with 9 points, ahead of its twin Italia Yachts 11.98 Scugnizza owned by Vincenzo De Blasio (CC Napoli) (1-3) first Italian team with 12 points, third in a comeback is Trottolina Bellikosa, X35 owned by Saverio Trotta (YC Marina del Gargano) (2-1) with 19 points. Third Italian hull is Palinuro, the J99 of former Olympian Gianluca Lamaro (10-7) with 41.5 points.
GROUP 2 CLASS C CRUISE – Leading the sprint is Low Noise II, Italy 9.98 of Luigi Valerio Dabove (12-8) with 36 points followed by Varenne, Italy 11.98 of Giovanni Toscano (NIC Catania) (14-5) with 56, Italy 998 Sarchiapone Fuoriserie of Gianluigi Dubbini closes the provisional podium.
GROUP 2 CLASS D CRUISE – Three yachts practically optioned the podium. Leading the way is Vlag, Vismara 34 by Luca Baldino (YC Gaeta) with Ernesto Angeletti and Fabio Montefusco (7-10) with 42 points, second is Northern Light P38, Dufour 34 by Enzo Ricordo (YC Capo D’Orlando) (4-6) with 56.5 points, and still third is Mart D’Este, Este 31 by Edoardo Lepre (CV Fiumicino) (5-11) with 67.
