If anyone had wondered what happened to Marco Gradoni, the three-time Optimist World Champion, we have the answer: he continues to win world championships. But the 2004 class phenomenon has since changed classes, tried out various boats, and landed in the 470 mixed where he is joined by the very strong Alessandra Dubbini, formerly Benedetta Di Salle’s bowman in this four-year term. The two won the 470 Junior World Championship in San Remo, dominating in the mixed fleet.
There were 42 boats in the regatta, the mixed class will be Olympic from Paris 2024, and the good news is that the Gradoni/Dubbini pair not only functioned but also started their program well in advance, which is crucial in Olympic perspective.
Marco Gradoni: “It was a very difficult week, starting with a UFD in the first round, which kept us a bit under pressure throughout the championship, however, we were good at managing to get it right. I say thanks to everyone who supported us, the Federation, coach Marco Iazzetta, and all the staff.”
Alessandra Dubbini: “We finally succeeded in the endeavor, a long week with lots of weather conditions, we compared ourselves with many junior teams, experimented with different types of pumping according to wind limits and gaits, put ourselves to the test and were satisfied. Apart from the first race that kept us on our toes for the whole world championship, we managed to emerge by consistently placing well and this allowed us to get to the Medal Race with some peace of mind and run a very good final. We are delighted, now it’s on to the European Juniors and then we will start playing with the big boys… as soon as possible!”
