fast boatAfter the first installment in which we gave you a few ideas (including hull, ropes, sails and vang) for upgrading your boat and making it faster, we continue our “column” by going around the booths at the Milan Yachting Week – The Digital Boat Show, our permanent digital boat show.

FAST BOAT = SAFE BOAT

Whether you race or love cruising (or both), we have explained that a fast, light boat will serve you better to take satisfaction from between the buoys than to enjoy sailing and forget about the engine. Not forgetting the teaching of the great navigator Bernard Moitessier, who in his famous “The Long Course,” mentions more than once the importance of good boat preparation and not loading oneself with unnecessary burdens, especially if one has to face long sailings and encounter challenging conditions. A faster boat is a safer boat.

AWAY WITH THE TEAK ON THE DECK!

Let’s start with the blanket. Perhaps it is time, in order to have a fast boat, to replace the old teak, in need of constant maintenance, with a much lighter (and more comfortable) synthetic coating. Keep in mind that, on average, teak weighs approximately 10 kg per square meter, while a synthetic weighs per less. Such as Permateek, PVC of absolute quality and 100 percent recyclable (weighs about 6 kg per square meter), which we invite you to meet at the booth of Refit Style, a company that has made professionalism one of its strengths. His services include supplying the material machined and ready to be glued or a complete job.

Another solution seen at Milan Yachting Week can be found at the stand of Synteak, the Italian importer of PlasDeck synthetic coating: it is called PlasDeck Performance 3.5 and is an ultralight PVC synthetic teak. This particular variation of the classic PlasDeck is designed to lighten the weight on deck as much as possible while optimizing the boat’s performance. Just think that its weight is only 3.5 kg/sqm!

Do you prefer a 100% natural and ultralight product? You can find it at Milan Yachting Week and it’s. cork. Discover the potential of MarineCork. Its lightness is extreme. It is the lightest coating (2.7 kg/sqm), ideal for not weighing down boats.

ELECTRONICS TO “RUN”

In a world where electronics carry more and more weight, in boating, having the right and “sensitive” instrumentation will allow you to maximize your performance while sailing. For example, in the booth of B&G, Navico ‘s sailing brand, the H5000 instrument and autopilot systems are waiting for you: with these you will always understand where the wind is coming from and be able to adjust the sails as best you can to go stronger.

The wind measurement is affected by the wind induced at the top of the mast by the pitching and rolling of the boat. H5000’s solution is 3D motion correction. H5000 acquires data from various sensors, including high-specification gyroscopes, to correct the induced wind, providing real data. Sorry if it is little!

From one giant to another, we move to the Garmin Marine booth. To get accurate data and thus be able to make better use of the wind and have a fast boat, we recommend that you the wind station GWind connected with the GND 10, the black box that enables seamless integration between Nexus instruments and sensors and Garmin products, including the gWind, gWind Wireless and gWind Regatta transducers.

Its plug-and-play installation, with USB connectivity, eliminates the need for system setup and configuration. GND 10 enables the use of racing software, e.g. NexusRace, Expedition, Adrena or SeaTrack, to communicate sailing-specific functions between Nexus and NMEA 2000 networks…
