Luna Rossa’s foil winglet up for auction
One of the most distinctive elements of the AC75 with which Luna Rossa team Prada Pirelli raced in Auckland in the 36th America’s Cup (winning, for the first time in the history of Italian sailing, three races in the final match against the New Zealand defender).
The winglet will be on public display in a special exhibition at Sotheby’s in Milan October 3-6, 2021 – Palazzo Serbelloni, Corso Venezia 16, Milan.
Why Luna Rossa’s winglet is a unique object
Three-dimensional metal printing technology was used for the first time to produce the winglet. In fact, the America’s Cup is not just a regatta, but a showcase that showcases the evolution of yacht design and innovative materials. For this reason, the winglet is likely to become an iconic element in the evolution of flying yachts. Now collectors have an opportunity to own a piece of history.
The winglet has been included in Sotheby’s “Life is Beautiful” sales series in which the renowned auction house celebrates Italy and the unique lifestyle with a selection of works representing its artistic beauty and timeless craftsmanship.
How much does Luna Rossa’s winglet cost
The auction base is 8,000 euros, with a final price estimated between 8 and 12,000 euros. Money that will be invested in a worthy cause, as Max Sirena, Team Director and Skipper of Luna Rossa, explains: “Never before has the issue of sustainability and preservation of the oceans been such a challenge for everyone. For this reason and in appreciation of the Sardinian community-which has been our home for years-we have decided to donate the proceeds to support a project to restore Sardinia’s marine ecosystems.”
As a token of appreciation to Sardinia-which the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team chose to establish its base of operations-the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the MEDSEA Foundation to support the Posidonia Oceanica restoration and planting campaign in the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area in Sardinia.
