But what gasoline, but what energy. The future of propulsion, as far as tenders and even small “educational” drifts are concerned, is … elbow grease. We are not talking about going back to the good old oars, which are cumbersome and difficult to stow, but we are suggesting a new contraption coming straight from Australia, the Free Wheeling. It is nothing more than a lightweight “hand-held” outboard, equipped with a propeller with large blades and a bracket that allows it to be mounted on the transom.
ECONOMICAL, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, QUIET
The benefits are many. First, compared with an outboard, lightness. It is ensured by the materials, the propeller is made of nylon and fiberglass: the crank with which you will operate the thruster is equipped with 3:1 gear in the connecting ring to the bearing tube (shaped like an “S”). By turning it in one direction you will go forward; in the other you will reverse. Then, besides being an environmentally friendly and quiet solution, it is totally free of maintenance costs.
PRE-ORDER BOOM AT METS
The inventor of the device, Ron Marks, racked up pre-orders at the last METS in Amsterdam: think 38,000 came his way! You can take it home, ordering it online, for 119.99 pounds (about 150 euros). www.thewetworks.co.uk
