Yesterday I took a miraculous medicine that eased the pain of what happened in Paris on Friday night. I went sailing. I woke up Saturday morning with a heavy veil of sadness that I could not shake off, but most of all I felt threatened in my freedom. On my own, with my small Laser that I have owned for 25 years, I rigged the sail, slid the boat into the water, caulked the sheet and set off.
An hour and a half pushed by the wind, in contact with the water, with the sea in your face. I became soothed, the medicine of sailing out did me good, to my heart, soul, mind, and body. Because sailing means freedom, those who are passionate about it know.
That freedom attacked by the mad jihadist terrorist action that caused hundreds of deaths and much pain. That freedom that is now written in our DNA, cultivated for centuries by our Western society. Freedom means considering it natural to have fun, to dance, to eat at a restaurant, to attend a soccer game, to listen to music, to drink alcohol, to have sex, to use the words one wants to say what one likes, to go to the sea. Freedom is an enemy that jihadism cannot even imagine defeating. And practicing the passion of sailing helps man understand how much freedom is worth and good for him. A most powerful medicine.
