What will the weather be over the weekend on our coasts? To help you decide whether to go out and “pull two edges,” venture on a small cruise or keep the boat in port, we asked Riccardo Ravagnan, Forecast & Services Manager at Meteomed, for help in revealing what the weather will be like along the Italian coast. Here is his “bulletin”:
THE WEEKEND WEATHER REPORT
SYNOPTICS: A North African-driven anticyclonic field persists over the Mediterranean, renewing a phase of stability and good weather. Moderate northerly currents flow at the eastern edge of the high pressure over the Aegean Sea with some daytime variability and a few afternoon thunderstorms. However, a change in circulation is expected over the weekend with the entry of an Atlantic pocket over the central-western Mediterranean harbinger of an unstable and stormy phase, associated with a definite strengthening of winds between Saturday and Sunday.
WINDS: Friday’s currents will be moderate from the WSW over the Alboran Sea, moderate southerly over the Sardinian Channel and Sicily, weakly variable over the Italian peninsular basins, taut northerly over the Aegean with strengthening particularly on the northern slope of Crete, weakly variable currents elsewhere. Saturday strong winds from the SW over the Alboran Sea, moderate from the SW over the Balearic Islands, Sea and Channel of Sardinia, Channel of Sicily, moderate from the South over the Tyrrhenian Sea, moderate from the SW over the Ionian Sea, SE over the Adriatic Sea. Moderate NW currents will persist over the Aegean, weak variable winds elsewhere. Watch out for Sunday with a sustained Mistral over the Gulf of Lion, seas around Sardinia and Corsica, moderate to strong over the Tyrrhenian Sea, especially north-central, moderate SW winds over the Ionian Sea, SE over the Adriatic. Currents still moderate from the NW over the Aegean, weak variable elsewhere.
SEA: Generally shallow seas Friday except for the Alboran Sea, which will be rough, at times very rough offshore, rough Libyan Sea, up to very rough Aegean. Saturday tending to rough in the Alboran Sea, very rough around the Balearic Islands, very rough to very rough in the north-central Tyrrhenian Sea, very rough in the Aegean Sea, slightly rough in the remaining Mediterranean sectors. Sunday to very rough or rough throughout the western Mediterranean, even very rough or rough in the Gulf of Lion, seas around Sardinia and Corsica with swells on coasts exposed to the Mistral, very rough or rough in the Tyrrhenian Sea, especially central-northern, also rough to very rough in the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean, slightly rough elsewhere.
