With the TAG Heuer VELA Cup / Veleziana, organized in cooperation with the Compagnia della Vela, the 2020 VELA Cup season goes into the archives. A difficult season for the well-known reasons related to the Covid epidemic, which nevertheless saw us take to the water in the name of our passion, sailing, and with the spirit of always: sharing, fun and regattas/sailings within everyone’s reach.
ANDREA CARLONI’S PHOTOS
About a thousand people took part in the lagoon sailing event for a total of 190 boats, ranging from maxi yachts (over thirty meters) to six meters. There was no shortage of competition, with great shared and international participation (boats from Croatia, Slovenia, England, Switzerland, Germany…). Compared to the usual time (12 noon), it was decided to move the departure forward to 10:30 a.m., so as not to run into the opposing tide. In fact, the regatta started from the stretch of sea in front of the Des Bains, and then proceeded leaving the navigation basin to the left, entering the Lido inlet and arriving in St. Mark’s Basin. The finish line was placed between the tower of the Great Dock on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and the church of Santa Maria della Pietร . The first to cross the imaginary line was Portopiccolo around 11:20 a.m., fifty minutes after the start. Following him were Arca Sgr, Way of life, Pendragon, and Anywave.
Also adding to the prestige of the regatta are the prizes raffled off by VELA Cup partners: an Acquaracer watch from TAG Heuer, a Sup from the Yellow Vetus line, the exclusive sailing bagpack from Doyle‘s sailmaker, a self-inflating jacket from Spinlock, and a Garmin Inreach satellite communicator.
