It literally could have ended in tragedy and the worst was avoided only because of the promptness of the rescue team and with some luck. Two German couples aboard an approximately 11-meter sailboat wrecked at the mouth of the Port of Ostia, a notoriously complex landing at its entrance in rough seas. But the sea was not only formed, as the waves reached up to more than 3 meters in height.

The boat was not entering the harbor, figguring from bad weather, but rather was leaving it. Seemingly inexplicable behavior on the part of the crew who persisted in their intent to leave port despite the evidence.

The boat suffered a series of breakers, at one point putting it sideways from the waves and inevitably ending up in rocks. The first impact was already fatal, having caused the boat to be dismasted, which was completely destroyed in a matter of minutes due to the swells. The four were rescued by the Coast Guard, and one of the two women on board needed surgery for major leg injuries.

A lesson the four will long remember.
