We have already told you about the virtual racing phenomenon HERE. In a tough time for sailors, as for everyone, playing online with some virtual regattas can be a healthy pastime. This was also understood by the FIV, which then decided to create a national trophy, also involving the champions of the Olympic classes and Luna Rossa sailors. That’s right, you will be able, thanks to the Virtual Regatta platform, to participate in a national online regatta, plus be faced with an Olympic or America’s Cup sailor. And if that is not enough involved in the project is also Filippo Lanfranchi, world champion of e-sailing.
THE FIV ANNOUNCEMENT
Sailors abide by rules and deliveries: #iostoacasa is the buzzword followed by thousands of enthusiasts, sea and boat lovers, sport sailors, racers, athletes. Among all the more than 140,000 members of the FIV, the Italian Sailing Federation, there are growing initiatives to keep alive, even locked indoors, a passion based on the natural elements: the wind, clouds, water from the sea or lakes, and waves.
There is growing attention to virtual sailing specialties, with the recognition of e-sports by the International Olympic Committee itself, and the next step by World Sailing, the world sailing federation, with the introduction of e-sailing. Italian sailing came out on top immediately, winning the final of the 2019 e-sailing world championship with Filippo Lanfranchi, nickname Velista71.
The IVF these days launches a major interzonal e-sailing event, that is, in all 15 Zones into which the organization of national sailing activity is divided. It is called One Thousand for One Sail, because it aims to involve up to 1,000 virtual sailors throughout Italy, using the Virtual Regatta Inshore technology platform, which is already familiar to fans of the genre.
A Thousand for One Sail is an e-sailing tournament specifically wanted by FIV President Francesco Ettorre: “Virtual sailing is exciting because it contains some of the basic elements of sailing sport: tactics, strategy, sail selection, rules…. In these days when all our members are at home, this is proving to be one of the healthiest ways to remind us of our passion for the most beautiful sport in the world!”
One Thousand for One Sail will be raced according to a schedule that includes: Zonal Qualification on Monday, April 13 and Saturday, April 18; Semifinal on Saturday, April 25; Final and followed by Medal Race on Sunday, April 26. A live Facebook and Youtube broadcast is also planned for the Final on Sunday, April 26.
Thanks to agreements between FIV and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, the finals will be raced between the 10 best e-sailors who emerged from the Qualifying and Semifinals, to which 9 “champions” will be added: 4 Italian athletes from the Olympic sailing team, and 5 members of the Luna Rossa team, challenger of record of the 36th America’s Cup.
Participation is free and open to all with no age limit, you just need to be a 2019 or 2020 FIV member, you register with an online form – https://tinyurl.com/MillexUnavela
active from Thursday, April 2 at 10:00 a.m. – contained in the Notice of Race HERE.
