We are introducing you to the 30 legends of sailing. Now it is your turn to choose the greatest sailor of all time.

30 Sailors of History QOK.qxd:Layout 1Vito Dumas’ feat went unnoticed in a Europe devastated by World War II. The Argentine lone navigator, between June 1942 and September 1943. completed a solo circumnavigation of the terrible southern oceans. He had left Buenos Aires in June aboard the Lehg II, a 31-foot ketch-rigged vessel built in 1934: no instruments aboard, only the sextant. He had no radio because he was afraid of being stopped and arrested as a spy.

vito dumas 2At some critical points, he was forced to stuff his oilskin with newspapers to avoid freezing to death. He recounted his adventures in the splendid volume “Toward the Southern Cross. The Roaring Forty.” Born in 1900, he died in Buenos Aires in 1965..

Because: Vito Dumas in fact made the first solo passage of the three great capes and the first successful solo passage of Cape Horn.
