Much better than the 80s choreography of Wham. Or ballets by the Village People. These above are workers from Australia’s McConaghy Boats shipyard engaged in the hull charting operations of Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats XI, the 30-footer that has won the Sydney Hobart eight times in a row.

And that it now wants its ninth win (the next edition starts Dec. 26): but as the level (competitive but especially technological) of opponents grows each year, Wild Oats XI (launched in 2005 on a Reichel / Pugh design and McConaghy construction) needs to upgrade. First the DSS two years ago, now wine magnate Oatley has instead decided to literally saw off the ten-meter hull at the bow and two at the stern, replacing the cut-off parts with others with more modern, high-performance sections.
