Until afew days ago, no one knew about the construction of an absurd new sailing megayacht commissioned from German shipyards Nobiskrug by Russian energy and mining magnate Andrey Melnichenko.
Are you wondering where you have heard this name before? Melnichenko is the owner (along with his beautiful wife Aleksandra, a former Serbian model and singer) of the A, one of the most talked-about megayachts, somewhere between a submarine and a yacht, designed by Philippe Starck. On that “whim” of his, the Russian paperboy had spent a whopping $323 million in 2008.
THE UNSUSTAINABLE COST OF UGLINESS
Now it has definitely improved its record: 450 million. That’s the price of the mammoth (and ugly, let us tell you) three-masted 143-meter (and 24.8-wide) vessel that photographers have already had a chance to capture during the first tests in the Kiel Canal (launching is planned for next year). The name of the project is “White Pearl,” and it once again bears the signature of archistar Starck: eight decks, luxuries beyond imagination. The masts are the three largest composite structures ever built in the boating world. Just think that inside the largest of the three trees there is space for a cabin! But we are not talking about a sailboat here.

CAN TRAVEL UP TO 22 KNOTS
The hull and superstructure are made of steel and carbon fiber reinforced composite. When it is not sailing, two 3,600 kW MTU diesel engines and two 4300 electric motors will think to propel it.. The motor cruising speed will be 16, knots, with a maximum of 22 (range of 5,300 miles).
