By now, the foil invasion is at an advanced stage: appendages have crept into every form of sailing, from acrobatic to “softer”, from oceanic to youthful. Check out this video, posted by Peter Warfvinge on his Facebook profile: at SSPA Chalmers, a Swedish company active in various fields from port logistics to hydrodynamics, are flying optimists, thanks to a T-shaped foil instead of a drift blade and a rudder that is also T-shaped. Innovative idea, but not a new one: there is a video from three years ago showing a young girl “flying” on an optimist towed off the coast of Marseille. Of course, here, unlike in the Swedish tank test, there was an obvious dynamic stability problem.
