No record is unbeatable. And the 2012 Sydney Hobart one, by Wild Oats of the late Bob Oatley, also capitulated. The new king of the Australian classic (628 miles from Sydney, Australia, to Hobart, Tasmania) is named Anthony Bell, and he is the owner of Perpetual Loyal, which we tell you about below. His race time (one day, 13 hours, 31 minutes and 20 seconds) is a full 4 hours and 51 minutes less than Wild Oats.
WILD OATS OUT OF THE PICTURE
By the way, the Oatley family’s own 100-footer was also leading in this 72nd edition but had to stop because of a canting keel problem, leaving the way clear for Juan Kouyoumdjian’s 100-footer. The record was made possible by the strong northeast wind that accompanied Bell (and skipper, Australian Laser champion Toms Slingsby) throughout the race.

For the compensated time victory, among the leading candidates is the VOR 70 Giacomo, second in real time, aboard which is our Francesco Mongelli from Rome.
WHAT BOAT IS PERPETUAL LOYAL
It is none other than the former Rambler 100 designed in 2008 by Juan Koyoumdjian, purchased by New Zealander Anthony Bell. It is a kind of “100-foot enlargement” of a VOR 70. It has a narrow hull, slightly heavier and has less sail area than boats of the caliber of, for example, Comanche. Ballasts of 8000 liters help the righting moment in stronger winds. As a direct heir to the VOR70s, which were built to perform best on carriers, it has an uncommon gliding ability.
