This is it, everything is ready in Venice to kick off one of the most anticipated events of the sailing season, the Veleziana, a historic regatta organized on Sunday, October 17, by the Compagnia della Vela and whose partners include the Sailing Newspaper with the colorful Vela Cup circuit. A grand return for this 14th edition of the Veleziana as registrations at the moment are at an all-time high. There are in fact more than 218 boats that will take part in the kermis, but at the discretion of the organizing committee there will be time until Saturday, October 16 at 6 p.m. to be admitted. Considering the 14 classes into which the regatta is divided, we can estimate about 1,200 people among all the crews present will flock to Venice to observe this beautiful city from its most natural vantage point, the sea.

Good news also on the weather front. In fact, according to models developed by Arpav, clear or partly cloudy skies are forecast for Sunday 17 with possible haze only in the early morning. As for winds, the day starts with moderate breezes from the northeast of about 6-10 knots that will then turn southeast in the early afternoon to drop to 4-6 knots. Temperatures finally give peaks of 17-19 degrees.

Veleziana

A splendid route between tactics and historical monuments

What makes the Veleziana an absolutely unique event is its route because it starts from the stretch of the Adriatic in front of the Des Bains, and ends up in St. Mark’s Basin, in front of the Doge’s Palace. During the route, which is very tactical because of the wind shifts, crews can admire the Pharaonic Mose project that protects Venice from the high waters, but also the monastery of San Nicolò on the left and the fort of Sant’Andrea on the right, passing through Sant’Elena and from there get lost in the beauty of getting closer and closer to the heart of the city. A real privilege since usually sailing is prohibited within Venetian waters.

The festival begins as early as Saturday, October 16

This great celebration of sailing starts as early as Saturday, October 16: in fact, at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Skipper Meeting with all registered crews, immediately after which the regatta dedicated to the Sb20 class will be kicked off, while at 5 p.m. there will be the award ceremony for the Veleziana 2020, which was not held last year because of the Covid.

For Sunday, Oct. 17, the Veleziana warning signal is scheduled at 10:55 a.m., while the time limit for the finish is set at 5 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held at the Sailing Company’s nautical headquarters on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Among the “names” of sailing appeal will be the Moro di Venezia, which raced under the Compagnia della Vela guidon at the America’s Cup, last year’s winner Portopiccolo – Prosecco Doc and Arca Sgr, Pendragon VI and Kiwi. Let the party begin!
