Sailing cup

On Saturday, September 17, with the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in La Spezia/Golfo dei Poeti, the 2022 season of the famous racing circuit organized by the Journal of Sailing comes to a close. An opportunity not to be missed to explore one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Italy.

Sailing still represents one of the most beautiful ways to travel, explore logos and experience them from a privileged vantage point: the sea. Just look at a map, get an idea of the coast and choose where to sail. It can be an archipelago, an island, a passage from one sea to another in the Mediterranean, or simply a stretch of coastline of the more than 7,000 that surround our Peninsula. Just follow your own inspiration or imagination.

Sometimes, however, one can also take advantage of a sailing event on the calendar to discover a new location. This is the case, for example, of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in La Spezia/Golfo dei Poeti, the last leg of the famous regatta circuit organized by the Giornale della Vela, which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 17. Taking part in this celebration of sailing is in itself fun and fulfilling in so many ways. It is an event open to all kinds of boats and crews, we all race together, anyone can win, and the atmosphere is relaxed. One of the strengths of the event, however, is the location, and before or after the regatta it would be really interesting to visit these places.

All the enchantment of the Gulf of Poets

The Gulf of Poets in Liguria is one of Italy’s most popular destinations for sailors. This stretch of coastline facing the Tyrrhenian Sea from Portovenere to Lerici forms a sinuous arc along which seafaring villages, ancient churches, and medieval castles stand out among rocky coastlines, bays, beaches, and nature reserves. There are also many well-equipped marinas and harbors, nautical services of all kinds, and redoubtable ports of call that keep those who venture out sailing along these shores happy.

La Spezia, a beautiful city by the sea

The heart of the Gulf of Poets is La Spezia. The city hosts a large harbor with more than 1,200 berths and is equipped with all kinds of boating services. In addition to the historic Navy Arsenal that has always shaped its face, La Spezia is also a beautiful Art Nouveau city with interesting museums, monuments, and many shopping streets.

Of note is the Morin Promenade, on the waterfront, with palm trees and flower arrangements. From here there is a splendid view of the Gulf of Poets, and ferries to Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and Lerici depart along its docks. Also absolutely worth visiting are the Castle of St. George, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Lia Museum, and of course the Naval History Museum.

Portovenere, the place that lovers like

Portovenere is a pearl of the Ligurian Riviera. Long beloved by writers and artists, together with the three islands of the archipelago (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto) and Cinque Terre it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is named after the Temple of Venus that once stood on the site of the romantic old church of St. Peter, on the furthest point of the promontory. From up there the view of the Gulf of Poets is breathtaking. Otherwise Portovenere is a seaside village with a charm all its own and easily recognized from the sea by its brightly painted houses. Not surprisingly, it is one of the most beautiful and most photographed places in Liguria.

Lerici, one of the most beautiful seaside villages in Italy

Lerici is definitely one of the most beautiful seaside villages in Liguria, with its golden beaches, medieval castles, and many villas surrounded by greenery. It lies in the center of a small inlet dominated by a promontory on which stands the 1152 erected Monumental Castle, which houses a 13th-century Gothic-Ligurian chapel and is now home to the Geopaleontological Museum. The port of Lerici is located right in the area below the Castle and offers 1,300 berths, 8 of which are reserved for transit with all nautical services.

In short, next September 17, come to the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in La Spezia/Golfo dei Poeti: race in a flotilla, have fun, you can win lots of prizes and visit a truly wonderful stretch of coastline. Which then is the most beautiful way to go sailing!
