America Great Loop
(circumnavigation of the eastern part of the United States of America) aboard a 1979 Cal 27 and in the company of a dog: Reggie.
7,500 miles. A mythical route, among American oceans, lakes, and rivers: starting in Florida and sailing northward, we skirt the states of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina in the Atlantic to New York Harbor, then continue up the Hudson River to Lake Ontario and Michigan and then pick up rivers and canals (including the Mississippi River) to cross the Illionois, Tennessee, and Alabama states with a southern route back to Florida from the west via the Gulf of Mexico. A route that touches thirteen states with the possibility of “stretching” to the Bahamas and Canada.
Katie and Jessie sailed like madmen aboard Louise, a small old Cal 27 that accompanied them throughout the trip. A small but comfortable cruising hull designed by Bill Lapworth with comfortable teak interior and a stable hull. Definitely a #plasticfantastic icon !
All sorts of things happened to the two girls during the journey: they had to stop several times to work because they ran out of money, they ran aground but then always managed to get by.
