Our Azzurrini never cease to amaze, and this season, despite an obvious generational change, is also proving to be full of successes. Three medals, two silver and one gold. This is the spoils of the Italian expedition to Gdynia in Poland for the 2019 Hempel Youth Sailing Wolrd Championships.

The gold medal and the title of World Youth Champion in the Women’s Laser Radial of Italy’s Chiara Benini Floriani (FV Riva) were practically never in question. The Italian athlete remained at the top of the leaderboard from the first to the last day, and this gold medal could only come as a reward for her clear superiority, also demonstrated by her 20-point lead over second, Spain’s Ana Moncada Sanchez, silver, and 22 over third, Israel’s Shai Kakon, bronze.

After a great start and the lead held for the first two days, the World Championship of Italy’s Nicoló Renna (CS Torbole) in the men’s RS:X class ends with a silver medal. The gold medal goes to France’s Fabien Pianazza and the bronze medal to Israel’s Liam Segev.

Great comeback in the men’s 420 by the Italian pair of Demetrio Sposato (CV Crotone) and Gabriele Centrone (CV 3V), who from 12th place on the first day came all the way up to second and took home a valuable silver medal. Closing in first were New Zealanders Seb Menzies and Blake McGlashan, gold, and in third were Israelis Tal Sade and Noam Homri, bronze.

Good seventh place for Sofia and Marta Giunchiglia (CV Sferracavallo) in the women’s 29er. Too strong for all other crews were U.S. Berta Puig and Isabella Casaretto, gold medalists, who finished 22 points ahead of second, Maltese Antonia and Victoria Shultheis, silver and 24 ahead of third, Swedish Martina Carlsson and Amanda Ljunggren, bronze.

The Italian Nacra 15 pair of Andrea Spagnolli (FV Malcesine) and Alice Cialfi (CV Ventotene) placed eighth just 10 points behind third place in a very short ranking. Australia’s Will Cooley and Rebecca Hancock won gold followed by France’s Titouan Petard and Marion Declef, silver, and Germany’s Silas Mühle and Levke Möller, bronze.

Closing their World Championships in 13th position were the Italian 420 women’s team, Carlotta and Camilla Scodnik (YC Italiano). USA’s Madeline Hawkins and Yumi Yoshiyasu won the gold medal, Spain’s Neus Ballester and Andrea Perelló the silver medal, and Germany’s Theresa Steinlein and Lina Plettner the bronze medal.

Ending her experience in Gdynia in 13th position is the Italian women’s RS:X Marta Monge (CN of Finale). Israel’s Linoy Geva won gold followed by Russia’s Yana Reznikova, silver, and France’s Heloise Macquaert, bronze.

Norwegians Mathias Berthet and Alexander Franks-Penty of Norway become world junior champions in the men’s 29er class, preceding Finns Ville Korhonen and Edvard Bremer, silver, and Australians Archie Cropley and Max Paul, bronze, on the podium. Italian Zeno Santini and Marco Misseroni (CV Arco) finished the week in Gdynia in 16th position.

In the men’s Laser Radial, Matteo Paulon (YC Cannigione), after an up-and-down week, finished in 13th position. The gold medal goes to Turkey’s Yigit Yalcin Citak followed by Australia’s Zac Littlewood, silver, and Poland’s Tytus Butowski, bronze.
