Welcome to the world of mega-sailing.
Marco Tronchetti Provera’s new Wally was finally launched in the Levante Port of Marina di Carrara. It is called Kauris IV and is an impressive 44 meters long (it is the fourth superboat, in order, of the 72-year-old CEO of the Pirelli Group). It was launched in a ‘armored’ ceremony attended by about 200 guests, complete with a priest. The cost? It appears to be around 30 million euros. While waiting for the first official photos(HERE those of the mammoth mast), here is everything you need to know about the boat.
It took the now-famous Persico Marine shipyard in Nembro (Bergamo) more than two years to give birth in its facilities in Marina di Carrara to a 44-meter that, designed by German Frers, will satisfy the sailing craving of Marco Tronchetti Provera, former owner of the Wally 107 Kauris III.
BLESSED TRONCHETTI!
But let’s come to the boat: “The new Wally 145 is the perfect boat for sailing around the world,” said Wally’s owner Bassani, “It epitomizes our credo of uncompromising performance combined with timeless appeal.” Without ever losing the pleasure of sailing, “in any wind condition, in total comfort.” “Initially,” Frers recounted, “the boat was to be even longer, but contrary to usual practice, the size was reduced during the design phase to the benefit of performance and seaworthiness. Extensive research was conducted to keep weight down while achieving a pleasant and spacious environment, three different covered areas, and a very sophisticated system for sail handling. The sail area/displacement ratio is higher than that of maxi-yachts in a similar category.”
FAST WITH BREEZES, STABLE WITH BREEZE
VPP forecasts speak of a fast boat even in six knots of air. “But stable and powerful even in high wind conditions.” adds Bassani, “thanks to the shape of the hull and the lifting keel capable of carrying the bulb up to 7 meters.” The total displacement is “only” 171 tons: roughly 100 tons less than similarly sized yachts that are certainly older (and therefore the result of less advanced technology than the one used, namely carbon fiber).
HYBRID PROPULSION
The great special feature of this superboat is its hybrid propulsion, based on two 650-horsepower MAN engines, two 60-kW electric thrusters, and two 10-kW lithium battery banks, enough, among other things, to power the mega-boat’s systems (including air conditioning) in “silent mode” for an entire night. When powered, the boat reaches a cruising speed of as much as 15 knots.
DECK AND INTERIOR
On deck, the layout follows the Wally hallmark, with the deck saloon and cockpit on the same plane. The absolute novelty is the lowered aft cockpit reserved for owners (to enjoy contact with the sea in total privacy), a true megayacht feature. The interiors, designed by Wally with Droulers Architects and the studio of Mario Sculli, include a large owner’s area with two “queen-size” beds, two bathrooms (for him and her), a study and two walk-in closets. The guest area accommodates up to 6 people, in three cabins (two with double beds and one with bunk beds). The crew area is in the bow, with four double cabins.
