Due to the marine weather conditions present in the Gulf of Trieste, the Race Committee, based on the indications of the Harbour Master’s Office and having heard the organizing company, having evaluated the weather alert issued by the Civil Protection and the weather forecast issued by Osmer for today, Sunday, October 11, has decided to cancel the Autumn Cup – Barcolana 52 presented by Generali.
The decision was made at 7 a.m. this morning as the weather developed according to the forecast of strong Bora and the materialization of the weather alert issued yesterday by the authorities.
“Faced with marine weather conditions such as today’s,” commented Svbg President Mitja Gialuz. seafarers recognize the need to keep crews ashore and vessels safe. We have worked very hard to carry out the event safely in terms of health aspects, now we have to respond in the most correct way and according to maritime logic to the weather and cancel the regatta. It is a challenging but necessary decision that preserves all the Barcolana people and respects all those family crews with small boats that are the heart of this regatta. There is something liberating about the wind beating the Covid: we overcame the difficulties associated with organizing Barcolana in this context, and what stopped us in this edition was only our natural element, the wind“.
The organizers monitored the evolution of conditions throughout the night, worked to reinforce the moorings, sent the tug out to sea at 4 a.m., and positioned the starting buoys at 4:30 a.m. this morning. At 5:30 a.m. the tug was placed at Buoy 1 with the goal of measuring the wind in that strategic area of the Gulf for the race and providing from there the information necessary for subsequent assessments of sea and wind conditions.
At 7 a.m., during the briefing at the Port Authority, the decision was made to cancel the regatta. “As we have been reminded several times in recent weeks,” commented President Gialuz. last July left us our own Sandro Chersi, one of the inspirational fathers of the regatta and a great expert in weather forecasting. Here, we dedicate this challenging choice to him because we know he would have approved, and we close this edition with his words: the good sailor saves the boat and his crew in the storm, the excellent sailor chose not to go out, and from the window he watches the good sailor at sea as he struggles to save the boat and crew. Sandro, our goal is to be good sailors, as you taught us“.
