At first glance, it looks like a winch. You install it like a winch, and its operation is similar. But it is not a winch. The new product developed by Harken is called SnubbAir: it was initially intended for use on J/70s and small performance boats, but it can also be installed on larger hulls (being careful, of course, about the loads involved) because of its versatility.
Itcan be used as a large-diameter ratchet pulley or as a ratchet top diverter. SnubbAir is able to hold the top without the use of a handle. It is the ideal product for racing boats or for boats on which, to maneuver spinnakers or asymmetrics, the load can be handled manually.
The big difference from the sheave of a regular block (other than attaching it to the deck as a winch) is the ability to add a turn on the drum to reduce strain and possibly use a winch handle thanks to the optional adapter.
SnubbAir comes with four studs built into the base with the same drilling template as the B8A model (the small winch designed for sport boats). The quick and easy installation of the device takes less than 10 minutes. All washers and Nylok nuts needed for mounting are included. www.harken.it
