Sailing Newspaper
Forty-four years ago, in July 1975, the first issue of The Journal of Sailing hit the newsstands
. They thought so, sitting in the cockpit in Sestri Levante, journalist Mario Oriani, former editorial director of Corriere della Sera, and Renato Minetto, an entrepreneur who had just sold his company to Carlo De Benedetti. It was supposed to be a game for two 50-year-olds who wanted to keep working but also wanted, finally, to have fun. Going by boat, of course.

The historic first cover of the Sailing Newspaper

It was an overwhelming success. A huge format that newsagents did not know where to put. An editorial product that certainly did not copy the sad generalist boating newspapers but drew on noble examples of “real” journalism.

Today, one year shy of the Sailing Newspaper’s 45th birthday (get ready to celebrate it with us in 2020) what is the Sailing Newspaper? What is it to you enthusiasts? Let’s let the numbers do the talking. Today each month our and your newspaper is read between paper-web-and-mail-social by 350,000 unique readers/users. And, adding up all the magical web interactions, it touches 750,000 people (total audience in technical jargon).

Not bad, we tell ourselves, for a universe that World Sailing (the world sailing federation) estimates at 1,200,000 sailing practitioners in Italy.

Long gone are the days, it was the 1980s, when Mario Oriani, excited by the advent of the fax machine that allowed a kind of newspaper to be sent without sending it by mail, conceived “Il Giornale della Vela Fax” which was delivered every week, at night, via Fax precisely.

In the newsroom on the morning the first issue was sent out, we received a phone call from Francesco De Angelis, future helmsman of Luna Rossa. We thought he was telling us “BRAVES!” Instead he scolded us, “You guys woke me up last night at 3 o’clock! The fax machine kept ringing to warn me of the arrival of your damn SAIL Fax!” Other times, another world.

How did we manage to reach such large numbers? First of all, with daily commitment, 365 days a year, respecting our founder’s mission: “Seek the news, always think about what your audience would like, don’t get complacent while writing, be honest. And get there before others.” This universal and timeless manifesto of journalism, today we no longer decline it only on our beloved paper or on A4 sheets of a fax machine.

Thanks to an editorial staff of capable young people, we use all possible communication platforms: the paper and digital newspaper every month, 24-hour news on our website ( we relaunch it on our Facebook pages (Giornale della Vela, GdV- Sailors United ) and Instagram (@giornaledellavela), we deliver it to your inbox with our newsletters.

And, to make sure we don’t miss anything, we physically show it to you by organizing the VELAFestival( and Facebook page) every year, with seven stages of the sailing festival at sea, the Vela Cup( and facebook page) and with The Sailor of the Year( . Last, but only in order of time, with Medplastic (, we want to contribute with you to the salvation of our sea, the Mediterranean.

And if we have forgotten anything that can be done to satisfy, still after 44 years, the passion for sailing practice, please let us know. We are here.
