Winner-8.00-daggerboard-top-small
It’s called Winner 8D, and D stands for “daggerboard”: you guessed it, with the retractable side drift blades typical of ocean racing boats. But this is the first time they have been seen on a cruising boat, moreover without a keel
: The two blades are not ballasted and are easily lifted with a hoist system, and are inserted into two holes that run through the hull. Quite an advantage, first of all, in terms of draft (which, with daggerboards raised, will come to only 35 centimeters). In theory, the boat can go anywhere.

NO
CHIGGLES, NO INGOMBRIES
Stability, the Dutch shipyard points out, will be achieved by concentrating ballast in the central portion on the bottom of the boat. This is exactly the pivotal point: if the system will work (we have always seen daggerboards associated with a canting keel or on sport cat, to increase upwind lift), it will be a significant revolution. The reduced thickness of the blades makes the bulk that will necessarily be created in the central part of the hull “bearable.” Underdeck changes little or nothing, volumes will remain the same and indeed space will be recovered given the absence of a possible drift box.

This is the third version of the boat offered by Winner Yachts, designed a by Cees van Tongeren of Van de Stadt design (the first two have a fixed and retractable keel): it will hit the water in a few days and has a base cost of about 68,000 euros. It will have the same sail plan as the other versions but a lighter mast profile. What do you think? www.winneryachts.com
