There is an Italian reality candidate among the four nominees for the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award, the prize that the international sailing federation gives to entities worldwide that have implemented high-impact, highly replicable sustainability initiatives aligned with World Sailing’s 2030 Sustainability Agenda.
Italy will be represented by Northern Light Composites (we have already told you about it HERE and HERE, and you can visit the company’s booth at Milano Yachting Week – The digital Boat Show), which we invite you to vote for from November 27 to December 4.
Because the prize, $10,000 to invest in one’s own business, will be awarded through public votes.

THE MERITS OF NL COMPOSITES
What prompted World Sailing to choose Northern Light among the four finalist candidates? Efforts and research to create a new circular economy for the yachting industry by making sustainable sailboats with technologies already used but innovative materials.
To achieve this goal, Northern Light Composites is testing natural fibers, such as flax, bamboo, or cellulose, in a thermoplastic resin to obtain a new type of sustainable composite.
HERE WE TOLD YOU ABOUT THE COMPOSITE THAT RECYCLES AND DOES NOT POLLUTE
Thermoplastic resin ensures complete recyclability of the composite at the end of its life or its reuse by thermowelding. In addition, natural fibers need much less energy to be produced, with a gigantic reduction in carbon footprint.
With intelligent design and engineering, NL aims to reduce the weight of boats and consequently reduce the materials used, in order to fulfill the “3R” concept (reduce, reuse and recycle). In combination with the already sustainable hull, the company is working to reduce pollution while sailing by implementing an all-electric engine and the use of renewable energy.
