One is calmly sailing in the waters of western Liguria when suddenly she appears to you. Namely, what has been called the ugliest sailboat in the world, Andrey Melnichenko’s megayacht A. The impressive photos we show you (some look like renderings because of the glossiness of the hull) and the text that follows are by Federica Federici, the protagonist of this close encounter with this 140-plus meter bolide.
THE UGLIEST BOAT IN THE WORLD?
The maxiyacht S/Y A belongs to Russian tycoon Andrey Melnichenko (who spent $450 million to have it built) and is 142 meters long and has three masts 90 meters high. He arrived at dawn on July 16 in Varazze where I was able to personally photograph him from our sailboat. The yacht S/Y was designed by Philippe Starck, Dölker & Voges.
SOME NUMBERS
It was built at the German Nobiskrug shipyards in Kiel and was launched last February. It has eight decks for the mogul and his guests, attended by a crew of 54. In addition to a helicopter landing area, there is an underwater observation room inside. The diesel engines are two Mtu twenty-cylinder “V” engines for a power output of 3600 Kw. The yacht is equipped with four 2800 Kw electric generators to power on-board systems. Propulsion is provided by a diesel-electric hybrid system with hydrojets instead of the old propellers.
MR. MELNICHENKO
Melnichenko, 45, was born in Gomel, Belarus, but of Russian passport being now a resident of Moscow, was ranked 89th in the ranking of the richest men in the world by the American magazine “Forbes.” His wealth is estimated at over $13.2 billion, making him the ninth richest Russian businessman.

Do you think the A is really the ugliest boat in the world?
