For all there is only to reach on July 3 and 4, the coast of Rome, where the TAG Heuer VELA Cup crosses the legendary 100 Vele, a historic regatta organized by the sailing clubs of the Roman coast and now in its 25th edition that has as its hallmark to be Open to every sailor and boats of all sizes, both offshore and dinghy. A totally inclusive formula that not only pleases us at the Sailing Newspaper and reflects the same values as our VELA Cup, but is appreciated and shared by hundreds of enthusiasts who line up at the start of this event each year.
TWO RACE COURSES CLOSE TO THE COAST
For this edition of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup/100 Sails, the race committee will set up two courses: one dedicated to offshore cabin cruisers and another involving dinghies (in singles and doubles) and multihulls. The first will compete about 9 miles from the stretch of water in front of the Ostia Wharf passing through the disengagement buoy positioned in front of the Nauticlub Castelfusano and continuing to the Tognazzi Marine Village, at a distance from the coast not less than 600 meters.
At the start area, the Sun Odyssey 49 “Amapola II” with its dark blue hull and visibly armed with 2 orange flags will line up at the crossbar of the Ostia pier to mark the start line. The dinghies, on the other hand, will be lined up about 4 miles from the stretch of water in front of the Naval League of Ostia to the Castelfusano Nauticlub, a distance from the coast of about 300 meters. For everyone at the stroke of 1 p.m. a prolonged trumpet blast will start the regatta/race.
LOTS OF FUN IN THE WATER AND ON LAND
The TAG Heuer VELA Cup/100 Sails program begins on Saturday, July 3, when the Sailing Village is scheduled to open at 12 p.m. with music, active booths and in-water demonstrations, while from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the conference room of the Rome Tourist Port, registration will be finalized for all participants to whom gift bags with gadgets from the event’s sponsors will be distributed. From 8:30 p.m. instead, the Crew Party will be triggered in the central square of the Rome Tourist Port.
Then on Sunday, July 4, the VELA Cup/100 Sails will get into full swing: a crew briefing is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. at the conference room of the Rome Tourist Port, while racing will start at 1 p.m. After the water trials are over, the fleet of participants will gather at 4:30 p.m. in the Sailing Village for the official awards ceremony, with many prizes up for grabs. These include the splendid TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch, the “magical” Garmin InReach satellite GPS, packs of Veneziani nautical enamels and paints, and Yellow-V’s nice and useful VB200T pneumatic tender. Finally, the evening will continue for all crews with a wild Beer Music Party.
In short, at the TAG Heuer VELA Cup/100 Sails you absolutely have to be there! By now, it is only a short time away…
