armeniaThere is a historic boat that Venice’s high water (we explained the phenomenon HERE) has tossed into the dock amid general indifference.

We are on the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, 20 minutes by vaporetto from St. Mark’s Square: the one you see in the photo is “Armenia”, which, as sailor and Meteorsharing Association president Alberto Tuchtan, author of the shots, tells us, “was made in the 1980s to participate in a round-the-world sailing trip that was supposed to promote Armenia to the world. The project ran aground, and the boat was practically never used.”

The prow “leaning” against the piers of the island of the Armenians

It has been more than 10 years since the boat, a 66-foot (20-meter) long CNB, “layed” in the small dock on Armenian Island (except for a period when it sailed in the ocean under an Armenian flag, as evidenced by this video) but the latest high water has been deadly.

Whose Armenia is it? It is not clear to us yet, but we can make some guesses: may have ended up on the “rump” of the Mechitarist Armenian Fathers (who still live on the island, since the 1700s, when Father Mechitar fleeing the Turks elected it as an ideal place to build a monastery). If the boat was not insured-more than plausible-that would be a major hassle because removal operations from the docks are likely to be very expensive. In addition, it remains to be seen whether the hull is salvageable or not (the deck, judging from the photos, looks like a good condition, but the starboard broadside and keel don’t look in good shape!).

The damage to the starboard broadside

But of one thing we are certain: seeing her like this, dumped on the dock and abandoned, hurts my heart!

We will investigate the boat’s smoky past (by the way, if anyone has more in-depth information, please write to speciali@panamaeditore.it), and we will keep you updated.
