copa-svela-novemberHaving a boat means never having a moment to be bored. With the good season over, summer cruises and fall weekends still warm, now is the time to enter the winter phase, which for every shipowner means one thing: tuning, checking, optimizing, in a word refitting, getting back in shape. Thus begins the season in which most weekends are spent on the boat doing “chores” that, while they can often be “do-it-yourself,” just as frequently require the help of an expert in the field who will intervene on board with his or her experience and advice.

So in the centerfold of the current issue of the Sailing Newspaper, we decided to put ourselves in your shoes and offer a series of questions (and answers) that every boat owner should do to himself every year at the end of the season and thus have plenty of time to prepare and fix up the boat for the following spring. From deck to sails, power to motor (we also point you to the manufacturers). We can already see you on board with a nice thermos of hot tea looking up as you ponder some of these questions we propose…

This and much more you will find by flipping through November’s Sailing Newspaper, on newsstands and digitally: find out in advance with us, here are some “goodies” you will find.

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-24-281. HAVING REAL FUN
The sailing for all of the great gatherings, the sailing of the great parties at sea and then ashore, the sailing that fills city docks with onlookers and enthusiasts. In eleven events, through spectacular photos, we present the best of sailing for all. Choose the event that’s right for you and–participate!

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-29-012. THE ARCHITECT OF THE SEA
Few men have changed the world of Italian sailing like Carlo Sciarrelli. A self-taught designer, born in Trieste in 1934, he left us exactly ten years ago. Throughout his career he designed some of the most beautiful boats that have sailed our seas (and still do). Ten years after his passing, we remember him this way, as the most original and controversial of Italian designers, capable of creating a unique and unrepeatable style in pursuit of what he called “God’s boat.” Telling us about it, he himself…

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-29-393. I EXPLAIN HOW I MADE MY BOAT ELECTRIC.
Daniele Bossi bought a small Far East 26 and equipped it with an electric motor. He is now hybridizing a 64-footer, a sign that the technology is now mature. The ecorvolution is upon us. We interviewsto have him explain all the tricks (and costs) of making your boat electric. And if not quite electric, hybrid and up to date….

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-34-464. BACKSTAGE – THE VERY LATEST
We continue our journey to discover the season’s novelties, straight from the docks of the late September boat shows, from Barcelona to the big show in Annapolis: here are the boats that impressed us, positively and negatively.

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-35-315. OUR EVIDENCE
We tested two boats that are diametrically opposed in terms of philosophy and design solutions: the very fast ClubSwan 50, a boat that is a real shocker that wants to revolutionize the very concept of the monohull (the signature is by Juan Koujoumdjian), and the Azuree 41, the latest addition to Sirena Marine with large storage spaces, ease of handling and endless customization options. For those who like to sail long but not only.

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-36-506. VELACUP AND BARCOLANA
We tell you in full detail what happened at the TAG Heuer VELA Cup Mariperman Trophy and the 48th edition of the world’s most famous regatta. Different events but similar in spirit. The watchword: have fun!

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-37-517. ANCHOR, CHAIN TOP
Tired, fed up, archly fed up with never really knowing how well the anchor line holds, whether we have too much chain or too much line, whether the anchor is well placed and most importantly, up to what wind strength it holds, we chose three different solutions put to the test to see up to what traction they hold without shipping or plowing. So we finally figured out up to how many knots of wind we could be sure not to crash our boat.

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-40-368. I COULD HAVE BEEN A LAWYER, NOW I DESIGN SAILS AND WIN THE ITALIANS
We tell you the beautiful story of Vittorio d’Albertas, a great sailor and sailmaker who does not like to be in the spotlight and opened up to us. He told us how he went from an untalented sailor (his words) to a successful racer and one of the most respected entrepreneur-sailors in Italy.

schermata-2016-10-27-a-12-41-469. OLD BOAT MAKES GOOD BOARD
Take a good 25-year-old boat, modify it with the help of designers with America’s Cup experience, and you have a “missile” in your hands that can wet the noses of the most modern one-designs. Here is the story of BandaLarga, the queen of Lake Maggiore who is now preparing to conquer other race courses as well.

kitefoilscupitaly2016d2_0410. KITE FOIL AT THE OLYMPICS? WE WANT IT
Throughout the November issue you will find calls for kiting with foils, which we think is an excellent appeal to young people who are slowly becoming disaffected with traditional sailing. Then again, the numbers say it: one and a half million fans of the average age of 20 around the world (in Italy there are 18,000).

Remember, there are also many other good reasons not to miss the new November issue of the Sailing Journal. On newsstands, on iPad, iPhone and all Android tablets and smartphones.
