It saw the light of day in 1968. Worldwide there are 1,500 of them. In Italy, where it originated, there is a fierce fleet. But it was in danger of becoming extinct. St we are talking about the Meteor, a 6-meter-long small-cabin boat designed by Dutchman Van De Stadt, which will continue to be produced thanks to the passion of Gigi Faliva on the border between Liguria and Tuscany, in Aulla at Tecnoresine.
The Meteor thus will retain the world record for the longest-lived production cabin boat in history, in production for a full 53 years. The story of the Meteor Faliva rescuer is exemplary. Involved by three instructors from the Erix club in Lerici, where he resides, Gigi participates in the renovation of an old Meteor. He fell in love with it, contacted the previous builder, Nautica Lodi of Luino, and thus the project to build the Meteors was born.
Faliva also intends to provide assistance to Meteor sailors, who number in the hundreds in Italy, gathered in the historic Assometeor association (
www.assometeor.it
) which has as many as 11 fleets distributed throughout Italy. Faliva’s dream is to make the Meteor the affordable boat for anyone who wants to learn to sail and, perhaps then own a boat without spending too much money. But also to make the Meteor the boat that involves young people, people with disabilities and is a tool to make sailing a job.
