The spectacle of the Rolex Swan Cup is always something unforgettable. All the more so this year that as many as 125 boats competed in the waters in front of Porto Cervo. One out of all of them made our hearts flutter. Can you understand why?
Everyone was there, from Maxi (winner Freya), to Mini Maxi(Arobas), to the great classics signed Sparkman & Stephens (third consecutive win for the Swan 48 Sleeper X). The Swan 45 world championship was also held on the occasion, which was won by Elena Nova, while Natalia confirmed herself as the strongest Swan 42 (also her third win in a row).

We saw as many as three new Clubswan 50s on the water, the latest Swan signed by Juan Kouyoumdjian. But … there are boats that are more striking than all the others. One of them is, undoubtedly, Tarantella. Don’t you know what we are talking about?
Tarantella is the first Swan 36 ever built, indeed, the first Swan ever built. It was the year 1966 when this boat was commissioned from Pekka Koskenkylä. Pekka had the insight and ability to convince Sparkman & Stephens, one of the most important firms of all time, to design their first fiberglass hull.
No one before that time had made a ten-meter boat out of that material. And it was the beginning of the revolution in boating. But many were Tarantella’s innovations, such as the backward position of the rudder. Before it was even launched, Pekka received three more orders for that project.
TARANTELLA DURING THE RESTORATION
Tarantella, after various vicissitudes, returned to the shipyard’s ownership in 1996, and in the years that followed, it was the subject of a major restoration effort by, go figure, its first builders. Couldn’t miss this Swan Cup that was also celebrating 50 years of the Finnish shipyard!
