Having passed the 25-year mark, the Formenton Trophy keeps the spirit of the very first editions intact: a day of sailing, unique scenery with a course among the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago (starting in the stretch of water in front of Porto Rafael-Palau), Of the friends and family members on board who share the same passionAnd for this corner of paradise, which he so loved Mario Formenton, former president of Mondadori to whom the regatta is dedicated. Small boats, big boats, racing boats and cruising boats, who mostly want to spend a special day at sea for a day! Those who participate for once always try to return, because in this regatta the excessive competitive aggression usually found in the national sailing scene is left aside in order to fully enjoy-at least for a day-going to sea, the scenery, the company of close friends.
Precisely in order to emphasize the non-professional spirit of the event for some years now, a “white sails” category has also been created with great success, in which all shipowners who are eager to participate but who, for various reasons, can only do so “armed” with a mainsail and jib can register.
Organized by the Sporting Club Sardinia of Porto Pollo, with logistical and technical support from the Yacht Club Punta Sardegna and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, respectively, the Formenton Trophy is a fixture that for many years has always been scheduled on August 20 each year, whatever day of the week it is. The publishing house “Il Saggiatore” and the Port Rafael Consortium are contributing to the event. For many it is a chance to say goodbye to summer vacation and return to their work.
The twinning with our VELA Cup and its regatta/sailing formula open to all boats (even those without a tonnage certificate) succeeds in broadening the spirit of the Formenton Trophy even more. The family of sailors, cruisers, and lovers of the Sardinian coast and the Maddalena Islands is expanding to become even more of a Sailing Festival for those who, at least for once a year, want to have fun sailing without going to extremes. Summer is the much-desired time to spend your vacation, sailing with your friends or family.
The VELA Cup Summer – Formenton Trophy is the August 20 event, in Porto Rafael-Palau, to have a fantastic sail among the most beautiful islands of the Maddalena Archipelago, on a course of about 21 miles. Even the most hard-core regatta goers for a day resume going to sea as pure fun, pure enjoyment of fellowship among loved ones, with a chance to throw down a challenge to their childhood friend and dock neighbor.
