More and more boat owners are deciding to bring their boats back to Italy from abroad for the winter season, aided by restrictions on movement outside national borders. This situation dovetails with the other trend, that of deciding to move the boat from the usual port near the place of residence to moorings that are more attractive from a tourist point of view.
The boat thus truly becomes a kind of second hometo be used throughout the year. One of the regions of Italy that best lends itself to this solution is Sardinia, which is well-stocked with excellent marinas, well-protected and equipped with all necessary services. In addition to being a land that makes you feel like you are on vacation, away from the everyday.
Italy’s second-largest island also has the advantage of having a well-served transportation network to and from the mainland with three airports-Olbia in the northeast, Alghero in the northwest, and Cagliari in the south-as well as sea connection service with departures from Genoa, Livorno, Piombino, Civitavecchia, Naples, and Palermo.
The advice outside the choir
Where to keep the boat in Sardinia? The network of marinas is one of the best equipped in Italy with some 30 true marinas that are safe even in winter and more than 20,000 berths.
We picked up two tips this summer from two boat owners who have decided to take their boats to Sardinia for years already and keep them year-round in unusual places. They are out-of-the-ordinary “goodies” that are inhabited year-round and are the “real” Sardinia.
Marina di Baunei, Santa Maria Navarrese. 10 km from Arbatax where ferries also arrive, the port of Santa Maria Navarrese is a delightful medium-sized marina with 375 berths that accommodates even large boats, up to 40 meters. 150 km from Cagliari airport and 160 km from Olbia airport. Located on the central eastern coast is in the Ogliastra area, in the territory of Baunei, 40 km of limestone ramparts and cliffs interspersed with small coves on the sea and charming villages rich in history. Cagliari, Marina Piccola and Motomar Sarda in the port of Cagliari. Marina Piccola is the marina of Poetto, Cagliari’s stunning 6-km-long beach. The 350-boat marina up to 22 meters is a small gem just minutes from the city center. The company that runs it, Motomar Sarda, also has a dock in the harbor in the city center with 108 berths for boats up to 35 meters. There is also a shipyard here that does all kinds of garaging and refitting work. Those unfamiliar with Cagliari will be amazed by its beauty, its welcome, and the mix of contemporary and ancient that makes it an unusual half. Tel. 0706051901,
